1913 – 1922

With the Headmaster’s longstanding emphasis on the ideals of patriotism, military service and commitment to the British Empire, it is of little surprise that Newington Old Boys had an outstanding involvement in Australia’s war effort. Throughout the war, The Newingtonian published letters from Old Boys at “the front”, stirring the blood of students approaching military age. Memories of those who died linger today – the College received a memorial gift of 1100 pounds from the parents of Gunner Jack Johnson. This  donation is still enjoyed by every boy who steps out onto the Johnson Oval. By the end of 1918 some one hundred and nine boys had lost their lives in the Great War.
